"The
perfect place to honeymoon"
Hundreds
of couples have gotten married, or honeymooned, in the Indigo House.
People
come from all around the globe -- from Europe, South Africa, even the
Philippines -- just to get married or honeymoon in this very special,
romantic getaway.
What
better way to begin your blessed union than in the beach paradise that
is Cane Garden Bay's Indigo House.
How
to get married in the BVI
Getting married in the BVI means your marriage license includes the
phrase, "On Her Majesty's Service." Marriages in the BVI are recognized
the world over. Check with your local government's marriage-licensing
agency if you don't believe us!
Unless
you're a "belonger," marriage on the island of Tortola requires taking
care of a few legal matters, but it's certainly worth the experience
when the last witness signs the license at the end of the ceremony.
You'll have quite a story to tell your envious friends forever after.
We
can help you through the process, as well as provide video services
to capture the event, and a beautiful beachfront setting for the ceremony.
After the rings are firmly in place on the newlywed, enjoy dinner and
refreshments just steps away from the sandy "altar."
Indigo House is the perfect place to celebrate, with family and friends,
the beginning of your life together!
An
official from the Registrar's Office performs the ceremony and can be
scheduled to meet you on the beach at Indigo House. A BVI civil ceremony
lasts about 15 minutes, unless the bride and groom exchange statements
or readings. Instead of a civil ceremony, you can arrange for a minister
of your religious choice to marry you if you wish. Note that not all
religions allow marriages outside the physical church building, and
often never administered by anyone other than a minister of the religion.
Check
with your local religion's doctrines regarding outdoor weddings. Keep
in mind that a civil ceremony on the beach in Cane Garden Bay results
in a perfectly legal marriage.
The Process and Requirements
The following is valid as of April, 2000 and is paraphrased directly
from the official "Requirements for Obtaining a Marriage License in
the British Virgin Islands," available from:
Attorney General's Chambers
Government of the British Virgin Islands
P.O. Box 242
Road Town, Tortola
British Virgin Islands
Upon
immediate arrival in the BVIs, you can apply for a Marriage License
at the Attorney General's Chambers which is situated on the second floor
of Central Administration Complex, Road Town, Tortola. The attorney
General's Chambers is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30
p.m. [except some holidays].
A Marriage License takes three (3) full working days to process and
a copy of all documents is required. Both petitioners must be present
at the Attorney General's Chambers when applying for the license. After
the license has been granted by the Governor, it remains valid for three
(3) months from the date it is signed. At the Attorney General's Chambers
you must:
- Purchase
a $110.00 (U.S. currency) postage stamp from the Post Office, located
on Main Street in Road Town, for a Special License if [BOTH PETITIONERS?]
you have been resident in the British Virgin Islands for less than
fifteen (15) days.
- Purchase
a $50.00 (U.S. currency) postage stamp from the Post Office, located
on Main Street in Road Town, for an Ordinary License if [BOTH PETITIONERS?]
you have been resident in the British Virgin Islands for fifteen (15)
or more days.
- Provide
proof of each petitioner's identity and resident status, including
the day you arrived in the British Virgin Islands, via either your
passports or (a) original birth certificate and (b) picture identification
(such as a valid driver's license) and (c) immigration cards or stubs
which were give to you upon entry into the British Virgin Islands.
- Produce
a letter of consent for persons under the age of eighteen (18). A
letter of consent may be in the form of a letter if parents of the
minors are not in the territory; otherwise, the parent is required
to accompany the petitioners in filling out a consent form in the
Attorney General's Chambers. In the case of adoption, adoption papers
must be presented and if parents are deceased, a death certificate
is required and a Guardian, preferable an adult relative of immediate
family, may consent to the marriage,
- Provide
proof of marital status, including original or certified copies of
Decrees Absolute for divorced petitioners or Death Certificates of
deceased spouses.
- Provide
two witnesses to witness and sign your Marriage License Application
Form. These two witnesses need not be the same two who will be present
at your Marriage Ceremony.
- Provide
a letter from a minister stating s/he is going to marry you, if the
marriage is to be performed by a minister.
Having
applied for the license, you may then proceed to the Registrar's Office
to schedule an appointment for the date, time, and location you wish
to be married. The Attorney General's Chambers sends all acquired documents,
including the license, to the Registrar's Office after processing. The
Registrar presents these documents to you on the day of your wedding.
