Welcome
to the Indigo House.
Traveling
to Tortola, BVI
To
gain entrance to the British Virgin Islands from the United States,
you need a:
- passport,
or
-
original birth certificate and a photo ID, such as a valid driver's
license.
Beef
Island at Tortola is in the process of expanding its runways and airport
to accommodate jets. Until that project is complete, you have a choice
of two destinations prior to Tortola: San Juan, Puerto Rico or St. Thomas,
USVI. Several major airlines book flights all the way to St. Thomas
and to Tortola, by way of San Juan.
Via
San Juan
Many major airlines fly you all the way to Tortola by way of Beef
Island. A typical flight jets into San Juan, Puerto Rico. From there
it's just a short flight in a smaller airplane to Beef Island (EIS),
where you'll check in at customs at the airport.
Beef
Island connects to Tortola by way of the Queen Elizabeth Bridge. Catch
a cab to Cane Garden Bay or rent a car, but if you plan to drive, remember
to STAY LEFT. The British drive on the left, unlike Americans, who drive
on the right side of the street.
Don't
forget to budget $10 for the Departure Fee, payable in cash (U.S. currency
only) upon departure from the Beef Island airport.
Via
St. Thomas
Many major airlines fly directly St. Thomas. From there you can
grab a cab to catch a ferry to West End, Tortola. The ferry ride can
take about 45 minutes. Some folks like the air-to-water route, while
others prefer the immediate gratification of flying into Beef Island
from San Juan.
